Dreadlock Maintenance FAQ

  • How should I have my hair before my Maintenance?

Please wash your hair prior to your dreadlock maintenance appointment and most importantly come with DRY dreadlocks. A maintenance on damp dreads can cause hair breakage and won’t be as effective than if your dreads were dry.

  • How long will it take?

Dreadlock Maintenance can take 1- 2 hours for a dread hawk styles and up to 4 hours for a full head dreadlock maintenance. If a Dread repair is required, it can take up to 5 - 7 hours depending on the work needed.

  • Do I need to do anything after a Maintenance?

Try not to wash your hair for a minimum of 4 days after your dreadlock maintenance. This is to help your dreads settle with the new maintenance and allow the hair to lock into place.

  • What technique do is use?

An all natural crochet method is whats used for all dreadlock work. This method has been refined by the Dread Shed AU and is the technique used by Steph. This method a is crochet method only and uses no chemicals, wax, interlocking and isn't the rip tare method,

New Dreadlock Installation FAQ

  • How should I have my hair for my appointment?

Before a new dreadlock installation, it is important not to wash your hair 4 - 5 days prior to your appointment. The natural oils in your hair will help in the locking process for new dreadlocks.

  • How long will it take?

It really depends on your hair length, the style and if any extensions are installed. For a full head of dreadlocks at medium length, you're roughly looking at 8 hours work.

  • How do I wash my new dreadlocks?

GOOD QUESTION! It’s important to wash your dreadlocks regularly to keep them clean and free of nasties. Make sure to rinse all the soap out to avoid build up and keep in mind, it’s even more important to dry you dreads!   • How often should I get a Maintenance after getting new dreadlocks?

After getting new dreadlocks, your first maintenance should be anywhere between 3 - 6 weeks until they mature (1 year old). Depending on your hair type, hair thickness, hair texture and/or your lifestyle, will determine how often you will need to get a dreadlock maintenance. Once your dreadlocks have matured, its up to you how often you come back but I recommend every 3 - 6 months.

  • Anything I have to do after my dreadlock installation?

Try not to wash your hair for a minimum of 4 days after your dreadlocks installation; this is so to help the locking process. For the best results, you want to keep your dreadlocks dry and salty using a salt spray to mist your hair.

  • Does it hurt?

Creating new dreadlocks shouldn't be painful or hurt but this process can be a little uncomfortable. The method that's used by Steph is a refined technique that doesn't use any wax, chemicals, interlocking and isn't rip tare method.
