 Dreadlock FAQs

  • Please wash your hair prior to your dreadlock maintenance appointment and most importantly come with DRY dreadlocks. A maintenance on damp dreads can cause hair breakage and won’t be as effective as if your dreads were dry.

  • Dreadlock Maintenances can take:

    - 2 hours for a dread hawk styles.

    - 3 - 5 hours for a full head dreadlock maintenance.

There are a few variables that will determine the time; how many dreadlocks you have, when your last dreadlock maintenance was, how old your dreadlocks are (if they are baby dreadlocks or mature)

New dreadlocks (Baby dreads), will need more time for the first 2 – 4 maintenance sessions as they aren’t mature and need more attention.

If you would like just your roots done, please leave a note when making your booking so we can cater for you. This will shorten your maintenance time however your roots will only be done and not down the dreadlocks.

  • What determines the main differences for a dreadlock repair and a dreadlock maintenance is how regularly work is done to the dreadlocks. Here are the main differences:

    - A repair job is required when mature dreadlocks have not had a maintenance in 6+ months.

    - Dreadlocks are stuck together at the base and needing to be separated.

For dreadlock repairs more time is required to complete the job. Please allow up to 2 -4 hours for dread hawks and 4 – 6 hours for a full head.

  • Try not to wash your hair for a minimum of 4 days - 1 week after your dreadlock maintenance. This is to help your dreads settle with the new maintenance and allow the hair to lock into place.

  • An all-natural crochet method is used for all dreadlock work. This method has been refined by the Dread Shed AU and is highly recommended as the go to method in the dreadlock community. This method a is crochet method only and uses no chemicals, wax, interlocking and isn't the rip tare method.

  • It really depends on your hair length, the style and how thick your hair is. Please contact Steph with a picture of your current hair and the style you would like so I can work out a rough time frame and price.

  • Send a message to Steph via the website or email. Please confirm in your email the style you’re after, a picture of your current hair, if you would like to add extensions and if you would like opened or closed ends. Steph will get back to you with a rough time, price and availabilities.

A $100 deposit is required when booking all dreadlock creations and will come off the total price on the day.

  • After getting new dreadlocks, your first maintenance should be anywhere between 3 - 6 weeks for the first one, then every 2 - 3 months until they mature (1 year old). Depending on your hair type, hair thickness, hair texture and/or your lifestyle, will determine how often you will need to get a dreadlock maintenance. Once your dreadlocks have matured, it’s up to you how often you come back but I recommend every 3 - 6 months.

  • Try not to wash your hair for a minimum of 4 days - 1 week after your dreadlocks installation; this is so to help the locking process. For the best results, you want to keep your dreadlocks dry and salty using a salt spray to mist your hair.

  • Creating new dreadlocks or having a dreadlock maintenance shouldn't be painful or hurt but this process can be a little uncomfortable. The method that's used by Steph is a refined technique that doesn't use any wax, chemicals, interlocking and isn't rip tare method which can be quite painful.

 Braids FAQs

  • It is recommended to not wash your hair 1 days prior to your appointment, natural oils help the braids to have better hold. For best results please blow out or straighten your hair. Please also make sure your hair is well brushed before your appointment.

  • Depending on the braided style, it can take between 45 min to 8 hours. Boxer Braids take roughly 45 - 60 mins to complete.

  • The extensions are a loose synthetic fibre that are braided into the style. These can easily be removed by taking out the braid.

  • Sleeping with a silk or satin bandanna on or a silk or satin pillow can really help keep them neat. You can also use a tooth brush and gell to lay down flyaways.

  • It will depend on the style, the person's hair and how they manage them. Roughly 1 - 2 weeks for most braids.

  • No they won't! Instant length, instant colour and thickness at no cost to your healthy hair!

  • Contact Steph to discuss custom braided styles
